FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(ALEXANDRIA, VA) –The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP), the organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and promote the nation’s consensus standards for pools, hot tubs, and spas, reminds pool and spa owners to check their pool and spa drain covers for safety to avoid a possible suction entrapment hazard.

“The ‘Check A Drain’ initiative reminds both homeowners as well as professionals, to make sure pool, spa and hot tub drain covers are replaced per the manufacturer’s time requirement stamped on the cover in accordance with Federal mandates in the Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB)  Pool & Spa Safety Act,” said APSP Vice President Carvin DiGiovanni.

“It’s deadly serious to replace expired drain covers and a good time to check is right before the start of the swim season. At any time, do not use the pool or spa if the drain cover is missing, broken or incorrectly installed,” DiGiovanni explained. “APSP encourages homeowners to contact their pool, spa and hot tub professional to ensure that all installed drain covers manufactured comply with the ANSI/APSP-16 Standard for Suction Fittings for Use in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs.”

All units should be installed by an industry professional, in accordance with the drain cover manufacturers’ instructions.
